Cushing wrote this hymn text in 1876 and he remarked later that the words came from pain and deep turmoil which the world could never know. As is the case with time tested hymns, the truth he spoke then holds true today. Cindy Berry treats both its words and music with respect for its message and reverence for the expanse of God's grace toward us. The choral writing is warm and easily accessible; the sensitive accompaniment is humbly supportive. This is Berry at her understated best.
