Night in a Chippewa Village
Author: Clemens, James

Based on Native American folk melodies, this enchanting composition weaves a lush fabric of sound with many textures, creating a tone poem rich in imagery. Overlapping pizzicato lines evoke images of "insect songs" and other sounds of the night. From there, a pentatonic Chippewa lullaby emerges, and completes as the night sounds continue. Another Chippewa melody, "Song of the Deer Dancing," gently takes over, increasing in intensity and drowning out the sounds. Then the dance slows, and gradually the lullaby replaces it. The nocturnal sounds return, and the lullaby fades away. Highly entertaining!

Performed by the Alfred Studio Orchestra
Stephen Squires, Conductor
