Written in 1811, at a time when his hearing loss was escalating, Beethoven's incidental music The Ruins of Athens includes melodies that have been used in almost every instrumental format. The TURKISH MARCH may well be the best known from this work. Playable by string orchestra (or with the addition of any winds and percussion up to full orchestra), this Owen Goldsmith transcription breathes new life into a marvelous piece of standard repertoire.
