The Ancient Forest was inspired by the strands of old growth forest still existing in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, of which some trees are estimated to be over 400 years old. Beginning in a slow, mysterious fashion, the music depicts the dark forest and the soft pine-needled paths winding through them. An abrupt, dissonant introduction ushers in the second main section, which is filled with angular melodies and biting harmonies that represent the forest's struggle for survival against the natural elements and continued intrusion of man. The concluding allegro vivace represents the ever-present birds and scampering animals that always have, and always will, call this ancient forest their rightful home.
